What Is Occupational Therapy?

A Human-Centered Discipline
Occupational therapy helps people engage fully in purposeful daily activities—or “occupations”—including self-care, work, play, learning, and social participation.
Where We Work &
What We Do
OTs apply their expertise wherever activity matters—homes, hospitals, schools, workplaces, and community spaces. Beyond traditional clinical settings, OTs also work in corporate wellness, human-centered design, product development, and public health planning, translating knowledge of human performance into practical solutions. We analyze tasks, build skills, and recommend environmental or assistive solutions to remove barriers and enhance independence.
"Occupation is as necessary to life as food and drink. Every human being should have both physical and mental occupation. All should have occupations which they enjoy."
William Rush Dunton, Jr., 1919
The Impact
